Your skin issues are unique to you and it makes sense that the mask you apply to your skin should be as well. Multi-masking is an excellent approach because it allows you to create a customised solution to address your skin’s specific needs, area by area. Forget treating one skin issue one mask at a time, tackle them all at the same time… After all, customised skincare is where transformation and healing can really happen! The Theory... The different areas of your skin produce varying problems. From hormonal acne around the jawline, oily t-zones, sun spots and pigmentation, sensitive red areas right through to congested pores around the nose area and/or chin - there are generally a few issues each of us are trying to combat with our daily skincare routine. When it comes to applying a face mask the issues are the same but often we end up buying a mask that combats the most important issue and the others get pushed to the side. Unfortunately, as we all know, a product that is good for treating one issue or area of the face, isn’t always great when applied to another! This is where multi-masking is a literal skinsaver! By analysing your skin more closely and applying the correct mask to the correct area, you can actually achieve the holy grail of at-home face masks and give your skin exactly what it needs to restore balance to your complexion.  The Skin Prep… For optimum results you need to prepare your skin! Step 1. Remove all makeup and cleanse the skin using a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water to soften up the pores.  Step 2. Exfoliate to remove any build up on the skin surface, rinse and pat dry. Step 3. Take your prep a step further and try steaming your skin to further open pores by wetting down a face cloth in warm/hot (not scalding!!) water and placing it over your face for a 10 seconds. The Analysis... After cleansing, look closely at what you’re observing on the surface of your skin and start to reflect on what you’re seeing:  Larger, more visible pores? Red, inflamed areas? Congestion? Specific spots of hyper-pigmentation? Healthy glow? Smile lines? Worry lines?  Based on what you’re observing, you can opt for a clarifying mask, calming mask or hydrating mask! Below are even more tips for pinpointing your skin state and picking the most supportive masks: Oil-rich/Acne-prone:   Your skin is more prone to breakouts and inflammation, tends to produce excess oil and pore size is visibly larger on forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Applying a clarifying mask to these areas helps to sweep away dead/dull skin cells, draw out impurities, and purify pores. This will also promote detoxification and absorb and balance excess oil production to reduce buildup and breakouts. Sensitive/Damaged:   Your skin tends to feel reactive, dry, sensitive or appear red and inflamed along with visible pore size varying across the face. Applying a more restorative facial mask creates a protective covering and provides immediate relief for inflammatory skin conditions. Soothing masks deeply nourish delicate skin and deliver concentrated calming ingredients straight to the skin to help expedite the skin’s healing process. Dry/Mature:   Your skin tends to feel more tight, dry, sensitive or with signs of aging such as fine lines and hyperpigmentation along with less visible pores all over the face. Applying a nourishing facial mask can offer an immediate dose of skin-loving vitamins (like A and C) to promote collagen production and stimulate cell renewal to reveal a more vibrant, youthful complexion. Deeply hydrating ingredients infuse the skin with moisture, help to soften the look of the fine lines and signs of ageing and promote a naturally plump appearance. The Technique... Now onto the application. Generally you will need about three different masks to really target individual skin issues. Step 1. Apply a light layer of the correct (problem specific) mask to each specific problem area using an application brush or your fingertips.  Note: If one or more of your masks require extended application time then take this into consideration. For example if your clarifying mask needs 30 minutes on the skin, where as the others need only 15 minutes, apply the clarifying mask first and wait another 15 minutes before applying the others. The reason behind this is that some skincare products are significantly more active than others and you do not want to end up burning or damaging the skin by leaving a more active mask on for longer than recommended. Step 2. Sit back, relax and multi-mask. Put your phone down, put some music on and rest! One of the best parts of self care is actually taking time for yourself! Grab a good book or your favourite magazine and find a comfy spot to disconnect for a moment.  Step 3. Using warm water, soak a face cloth and partially wring dry. Apply the damp cloth to your face to help soften the mask before removing it - scrubbing a mask off without first softening it can damage your skin. Once the mask is soft/damp, re-soak the cloth and start removing the masks with a sweeping up-and-out motion (starting from the neck/chin) taking extra care around your eyes. Rinse the cloth and repeat until your skin is clear from all mask residue. Step 4. Follow your mask with your usual skincare products, starting with your serums and eye creams and finishing with moisturisers, mists and finally sun protection. Repeat this process once a week! Goodbyes are hard—especially when they involve expensive, half-used beauty products that have been hanging around too long. We are all guilty of holding onto makeup and skin-care longer than we probably should, but by keeping and using these products, we are swapping a little impact on our wallets for some major risks to our health.  Using dated or expired products can be potentially harmful. Bacteria breeds like  crazy  in dark, damp places, which means that makeup tubes and product bottles are basically Disneyland for micro-organisms. Worse still -  The longer you let these containers sit, the more that those teeny tiny microbes reproduce. So, by the time you go to apply your mascara, body wash, or moisturiser, you could potentially be slathering yourself with bacteria. The clock starts the moment you open the product. Though the time you should keep each product varies, keeping track of when you opened each product is the main issue. Many beauty and skincare products carry a PAO (Period After Opening) symbol which looks like a number followed by an M and an open jar icon and is usually on the product itself, though sometimes can be just printed on the packaging. Although its not a 100% sure bet, the PAO symbol tells you how many months after opening a product it should be thrown away. For example, a “12M” would mean you should throw the product out 12 months after you've opened it. It is a very good idea to follow that direction. All of this is especially important for skincare, because in addition to the safety aspect, if the product contains antioxidants, skin-replenishing ingredients, etc. (as it should), they will eventually start to deteriorate - even in the best packaging they just don’t last forever. We suggest that when you get home and open that new face cream, serum, or lippy, write the date on the product, so you’ll know when it’s time to toss it. Below we have popped together a quick guide on how long most skincare and beauty products should be kept. Use this as a guide for your beauty cabinet clear out - Anything that you have had before winter of 2018, most likely needs to go! MAKEUP Mascara and liquid or gel eyeliner: 3-4 Months  Every time you apply eye makeup, you introduce bacteria to the wand or brush from your lashes and lids, which then goes  back  into the bottle when you close it. Old makeup can introduce tiny, microscopic mites (as in:  bugs ) that live on your lashes and make your eyes itch, OR provide a home for really nasty bacterial strains that can cause conjunctivitis, or styes.  If your eye makeup is older than 3-4 months then it needs to go in the bin. Lipstick & Lipgloss If you’ve somehow held onto a lip product for an entire year without losing it, first, congratulations! Now, it’s time to say goodbye. Lipstick: 12 Months Lipgloss (like mascara) is a wand based product that should be replaced every 6 months. Liquid Foundation : 12 Months Even though foundation is technically okay to keep around for a full year, there are some stipulations to ensure it doesn’t develop any nasties during that time. First, store it away from direct heat (Window sill etc.)  Also, always use a clean brush or a sponge to remove it from a pot so that your fingertips don’t contaminate the rest of the formula. Liquid Concealers Tube/wand style concealer applicators: 6 Months This style of concealer (wand/tube applicator) develops bacteria faster just like a mascara does. Since we use them mainly for covering dark areas around our eyes, the risk of introducing a bacterial infection to your eye area is significantly higher when using older products. Liquid concealer - Tube style: 12 months As this type of concealer is generally applied from the tube to a sponge or brush, the contamination risk is lower. Like a liquid foundation these products can last up to a year. Powders (blush, eyeshadow, foundation, etc.): 2 Years Powder products are generally less of a worry than their liquid counterparts since the lack of moisture makes it harder for bacteria to thrive. Hang onto your favourites for up to two years but be conscious of regularly cleaning the brushes you use to apply them. SKINCARE A note regarding all of your skincare - store it somewhere cool. No direct heat or sunlight as this will significantly affect the lifespan of your product. Also if your product is in a tub, use a cotton bud or clean spatula to apply it to your face - No fingers! Cleansers: 1 Year You should be washing your face regularly enough (at least every night if not morning  and  night). Even if you like to switch between a few formulas (like a cream in the a.m. and oil at night), this timeline shouldn’t be a problem to follow through on. Serums: 6 Months Serums need to be replaced every six months. This is because the water-based formulas can be bacteria heaven plus, the major doses of active ingredients are likely to start to break down past this point. If your product has changed colour, consistency or smells different before the six months is up then this may be an indication that it has already turned. Moisturisers: 6-12 Months If you’re working with a water-based moisturizer, it’s best to say goodbye after just six months (they’re more likely to spoil faster because of the high concentration of H2O, which again is a bacteria-happy playground). If your go-to is oil-based, it’s ok to hold onto it for a year as bacteria can’t breed as easily in oil. Keep in mind though, if it does contain any essential oils, they can start to degrade more quickly, so keep an eye (or better yet, a nose) out for any questionable changes in smell. How to Spot a Beauty Product Gone Bad A product that seems to have changed color from when you first bought it, has separated into a runny, lumpy mess or developed a strange odor, or feels different on the skin than it once did (especially grainy or streaky)—those are all clear signs it needs to be thrown it away. The DOs & DON’Ts of Making Your Products Last Use these guidelines for prolonging the shelf life of your products. DO  store products in a cabinet or drawer. DO  wash your hands before using products. DO  tighten/secure the cap after each use. DO  consider how climate and humidity will shorten a product's shelf life. DO  toss out eye products after you've had an eye infection. DO  abide by the expiration dates on sunscreens, acne products, and prescription products.   DON’T leave your products near direct heat. Skincare formulas are designed to withstand the average fluctuations in temperature in your home, but not long-term heat. If exposed it will shorten their lifespan and stability. DON'T  store products in direct sunlight (for example, don’t keep them on a sunny windowsill). DON'T  add water or saliva to thin out or re-moisten products.  DON'T  "pump" your mascara. DON’T  forget to clean the cap or lid if you drop it on the floor. Use soap and water or rubbing alcohol and dry thoroughly before replacing. DON’T share your makeup or skincare products!! They say sharing is caring, but in this instance what you are really sharing is bacteria. You probably already know that your skin is a reflection of your inner health - Most of us having paid the “poor complexion” price after a night or two out indulging in treat foods and drinks, not to mention limited water and sleep! These events usually provide us with a little facial memory board to enjoy the morning after, evidenced by tired, puffy eyes and congested, oily, dull skin. A few days later your complexion will bounce back but continual diet and external stressors will take their toll. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and is deemed by most health and skincare professionals to be a window to your inner health - it can give you insight into some pretty astounding complexion issues and their underlying causes. Before we really get into it, take a look at the face map below. This map outlines the areas of your face where inner health stress will display itself most prominently. It’s a great tool to use to help you read the signs of your body’s inner health and give you a chance to look for potential causes for your complexion issues:

Okay, now lets have a look at the five most common, skin-damaging issues and what you can do to help treat them: 1. If You’re Dehydrated Dry, flaky skin can be a warning sign that you aren’t drinking enough water and are dehydrated. If your skin is naturally dry (as in it doesn’t get enough oil), then that's a bit different. If, however you wake up with an abnormal, dry patch/patches that have no moisture, your body could be telling you that something is up. If your skin isn’t getting the right amount of water it will become dry, tight and flaky, to let you know that it’s lacking hydration. It may also be a reflection on your skincare routine, using incorrect products for your skin type or not giving your skin enough moisture topically. If left unattended, dry skin is more likely to develop wrinkles leading to premature ageing! To combat this issue we recommend that you try and drink at least eight glasses of water a day to prevent skin dehydration and give your skin the moisture it needs to thrive, as well as checking in on your skincare. If you are unsure if you are using the correct products for your skin pop in and see us! We would love to help. Note: If, after getting your water intake up and ensuring you are using the right skincare, you find you are still suffering from dry, dehydrated skin then there may be some other underlying health issue that needs investigation. 2. If You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep Your eyes are great indicators of how much sleep you’ve been getting. If you’re not getting the right amount of sleep each night, your eyelids will be telling you the story by becoming especially puffy. Continued and chronic sleep loss will also be apparent when the skin on your face becomes lackluster, and fine lines and dark circles become more prevalent. To avoid these skin signs, as with water there is an amount of sleep we should be striving to get — aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night to give your body the rest it needs. 3. If You Have A Food Allergy or Intolerance Are you finding your skin looks a little worse after certain foods? Maybe suffering from a skin rash or patch of redness that seems to appear most often after meals? It could very well be your body’s way of telling you that have you a food allergy or intolerance. If you suffer from skin conditions like dermatitis (very itchy rashes on your arms, torso, face, butt, elbows and hairline) it may be your body trying to tell you something. In this instance a trip to your doctor for an allergen test can help you discover if you are allergic to any foods and give you insight on what to avoid if you are trying to heal your skin. 4. If You’re Very Stressed It seems that the entire world is suffering from some sort of stress at the moment and it is hard to avoid, but if your skin is breaking out badly it might very well have to do with the amount of stress you’re under. When our bodies are experiencing a lot of anxiety, they release the hormone cortisol, which can lead to those nasty breakouts. If you’ve seen a flair up of acne on your skin lately, consider the amount of stress you’re under. If it’s a lot and you think it could be connected, try de-stressing with activities like yoga or long walks (without your phone!) and assisting your body as much as possible by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water and getting that all important 7-9 hours of sleep per night. 5. If You Have A Hormonal Issue Ever heard of hormonal issues like PCOS or Hashimoto’s disease? Hormonal based health issues are becoming more and more common and if left undiagnosed and untreated, can cause us some serious skin nightmares. Hormonal issues will most likely present in acne and painful breakouts around the jawline which can leave the area quite sensitive and inflamed and can also cause irregular/heavy facial hair-growth. Most hormone issues can be treated naturally through a good clean diet, gut health supplements to support your immune system, hydration and sleep but you need to be aware of what the issue is if you are going to have any chance of managing it. Anyone else feeling the cold? Winter is nearly here and it brings with it those winter skin woes. As the temperature drops, our skin suffers - Cold air tightens our pores and reduces blood circulation which in turn effects the production of our body’s naturally occurring oil known as sebum. When properly produced, sebum acts as a protective layer and traps moisture next to the skin. When sebum production is limited, we lose that protective layer our skin needs to maintain its moisture. Combine that with the low levels of humidity the season brings (dry winter air), blasting heaters and not drinking enough water (guilty?) the result is dry, tight, dehydrated skin. Which, if left untreated, leads to flares of redness, sensitivity and congestion (acne). This is why it is so important to change your skincare up with each season, as well as taking the time to ensure you are eating a balanced diet and drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day (2 litres). We also recommend supplements. It’s no surprise that the average kiwi’s diet does not provide the essential vitamins and minerals needed to fuel and support our bodies. What is surprising is how many people don’t consider it’s affect on our skin! Of course treating your skin topically is still extremely important, making sure you use the correct products for your skin type, even more so: So what do you use? Generally the main mistake people make when treating their skin during winter is treating the symptom, rather than the cause. For example, if you apply a harsh detox type mask to congested skin, you may be doing more damage than good. If your skin is congested, specifically during winter, the cause will most likely be related to a lack of sebum production. Your pores will be tighter, blood circulation will be lower and those nasty environmental pollutants that your skin can usually expel, end up trapped. The key to treating this would appear to most to be a deep cleanse of the skin to remove the impurities, but what this will actually do is strip more moisture out and in turn, dehydrate, congest and stress the skin even more. The same goes with those who suffer from dry, flaky skin during winter and who treat this by exfoliating their skin in the hope of removing the dry build up. Again this just adds to the dehydration problem! This is why keeping your skin hydrated is so important and we can help! My before and after

Hi Everyone, It’s Leah here, owner of Bloom Skin & Beauty Boutique. I wanted to take a moment today to share with you my own DMK skincare journey. Like most women I feel the daily pressure to look my best, maybe more so than most because I run a skincare and beauty clinic. I present myself in a professional manner, with a full face of make up, hair done and ready to go, though underneath it all I suffer from many different skin issues, some of which you may be experiencing or have experienced yourself. Hormonal breakouts, congestion, lines but most of all pigmentation! Pigmentation is something I have struggled with since having my children, and although I have always managed to keep it at bay, I was never really happy with my skin, and definitely never went anywhere without make up on. Suffice to say, my confidence and happiness with myself was not where it should be. That was the case up until June last year when I decided to take on the DMK paramedical skincare range. This industry favourite is made up of 90% active ingredients (compared to most skincare which sits at the 10% actives mark). I met and put my trust in the amazing Eddie from DMK and from there my team and I started our DMK education. Our training was unlike anything we had experienced before and it took us a moment to get our head around how this paramedical range worked within the skin as well as how inner health played its crucial part in skin health. My mind was blown! I started on my own range of DMK home prescriptives and in-clinic treatments immediately and have not looked back since! Over a period of six months I also completed a series of in-clinic DMK Signature Enzyme Therapy Treatments and at home Foamy Lift mask between my clinic treatments so that I could see the results my clients could achieve using the same products. After nine weeks I saw a dramatic change in my skin, don’t get me wrong there were some bumps along the way (dry, rough patches, the occasional break-out etc), but I pushed through and I’m so happy I did! My in-clinic treatments are now once a month and alternate between a peel and an enzyme treatment, and I continue my at home prescriptives regime almost religiously. As you will see from my before and after, my skin is completely different. My pigmentation has reduced by at least 60%, my hormonal break outs are a thing of the past and my skin texture has never been better.
